Cody High School Implements New Cell Phone Policy to Refocus on Academics
Cody High School is implementing a new school-wide policy for cell phones and personal electronic devices beginning in the 2025–2026 school year. The policy is designed to reduce distractions, reinforce learning, and restore a culture of face-to-face communication and academic focus.
In an effort to address the growing concerns around screen time and classroom disruption, Principals Mitchell Espeland and Middle School Principal Jacob Gogan unveiled the policy in a recent video announcement watch here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N8BHlndSSHE.
The message: It’s time to reclaim our classrooms for learning.
Key elements of the policy include:
Phones off and put away: Students must turn off their cell phones upon entering the school building and store them in backpacks or lockers—not in pockets or on their person. Devices may be turned back on after dismissal at 3:20 p.m.
Applies to all devices: Smartwatches and any wearable or handheld devices with communication functions fall under the same rules.
Limited exceptions: Students leaving campus for internships or lunch may use devices once outside the building. Emergency calls can be made via office or classroom phones with staff permission. Students with verified medical needs should coordinate with administration for accommodations.
Consequences:
1st offense: Device held in office until end of day.
2nd offense: Parent pickup required, plus Friday School.
3rd offense: One-day suspension and parent pickup.
Further violations may result in restrictions on extracurricular participation or daily device check-ins.
“Our goal isn’t to punish students,” said Principal Espeland. “It’s to help them re-engage with their peers and teachers, and to ensure learning remains the top priority.”
The school encourages families to read the full policy here and to reach out to the administration with questions.
