Speech and Debate Tournament Results

Cody High School is proud to announce the outstanding achievements of its Speech and Debate Team at the Wind River District National Qualifier Tournament, held in Rock Springs, WY, on February 29th - March 2nd, 2024. The team showcased exceptional skills and dedication, resulting in notable victories across various categories.

Among the highlights of the tournament, Cody High School seniors Adeline Conaway and Royce Lineberger secured their spot for the National Tournament, placing 1st place in Policy Debate, and Royce Lineberger earning another 1st place title in Informative Speaking.  Additionally, Hunter Daley exhibited impressive prowess, clinching the position of 3rd Alternate in US Extemporaneous Speaking, while Hunter Daley and Christian Dudrick showcased their expertise by becoming 3rd Alternates in Public Forum Debate.

These remarkable accomplishments are the results of the tireless efforts and commitment of the seniors of the Cody High School Speech and Debate Team. Their dedication to excellence has not only brought honor to the school but also exemplifies the spirit of academic and intellectual pursuit.

This week the team will be preparing for the next stage of competition, the Wyoming State High School Speech and Debate Tournament will be held in Cheyenne, Wyoming on March 7-9, 2024. Yet, the excitement for the 2024 National Speech and Debate tournament, scheduled to take place from June 16th to 21st in Des Moines, IA, can’t be contained. 

Every summer, more than 6,000 middle and high school students travel to the largest academic competition in the world to debate current events, voice their views, and share their stories. After months of preparation, rigorous qualifying tournaments, and five days of prestigious national competition, the best of the best will be crowned champions in front of a live audience of thousands and tens of thousands more streaming the events online.

The National Qualifiers will now need to focus on preparation and fundraising efforts to help cover the cost of the National Tournament for the students and Head Coach. The team estimated this year's trip will likely cost around $6,000. The Cody High School Speech and Debate Team is determined to continue their streak of success and uphold the tradition of excellence.
