A big thank you to Park 6 Administration and Board of Trustees for purchasing book vending machines for our schools, including Sunset School! Our book vending machine will be used to celebrate Kids of Character.
We are focusing on raising awareness of our Sunset School Creed "I will be a kid of character, worthy of trust. I will be respectful and responsible, doing what I must. I will always act with fairness, I will show that I care, I will be a good citizen, and always do my share." Each month will focus on one of the pillars of character, responsibility, caring, respect, fairness, trustworthiness, and citizenship. November and December’s focus is responsibility. When a teacher or staff member sees a student exhibiting behaviors that epitomize responsibility the student will be awarded a token and explain why they earned it. During a break in their day, the student will accompany the staff person to use the book vending machine to get a book. Parents will receive a phone call about their kid of character, why they earned the token and the book they chose. If parents prefer a different book, the student will choose a different one.
The machine is filled with books that engage and inspire kids, and that parents in our community will appreciate. Any books placed in the machine are first recommended, vetted, and approved by our Library Committee which consists of parents, teachers from every grade level, our District Librarian, and the principal.
